Fancy diving with Thresher sharks on a tropical island paradise? With Xtreme Gap you can. We run a Philipines Divemaster programme in Malapascua, this is a particularly special place to do our divemaster due to the resident Thresher sharks and Hammerheads. Discovered a couple of years ago by accident, Thresher sharks usually live deep down in the ocean at around 200 metres, every morning they head up to the shallow depths, (about 20 metres) to the top of the Monad Shoal, where they will swim around a cleaning station and get cleaned by the cleaner fish. This is to the delight of the awaiting divemaster trainees, waiting to catch a glimpse of these special animals. Of course you do not have to go for a full blown divemaster course to enjoy some diving in the Philippines, you can go for some enjoyable fun dives or get certified with your open water course if you like, although if you really want to see the Thresher sharks, you should at least be an Advanced open water diver, as the Monad Shoal is an underwater pinnicle, that sits around 25 metres, and an open water certication (which qualifies you to 18 metres) will not cut it here. |

Then there is the ultra tough Philipino martial art "Arnis" (also known as kali - Stick and kife fighting). If you fancy a martial arts gap year with a difference this is the one for you. Learning this ancient Martial Art with Grandmaster Bambit Dulay, you will be taken all over metro manila, with Sticks and knives in hand learning the art of Modern Arnis. This is actually the national sport of the Philippines and a really unique an interesting way to get involved with the culture of the country and learn something pretty special at the same time.
The Philippines is made up of hundreds of different islands with rich culture, accessible through Manila or overland it is sure to be an unforgetable gap year destination. Due to the fact that is it quite spread out you will probably need to fly between different locations, Cebu Pacific is the main low cost airline, making travel pretty cheap, Air Asia also flys into the Philippines as well.
You will no doubt remember it forever and on your return you will already be planning your next trip!
