A gap year Tanzania is an unforgettable trip through the best of East Africa. A proper Africa Gap year should not be with out a trip to Tanzania. Blessed with incredible natural beauty, Tanzania is an adventurers dream. With an enviable location dangling at the foot of the great rift valley, the natural geography of the country is perfect for getting under the skin of the real Africa. The great rift valley is a one of the worlds most interesting geographical natural phenomenons. Spanning several thousand miles is goes from Syria to Mozambique, providing series upon series of interesting physical landscapes, from deep lush valleys, ripe with wildlife, supporting complex and unique eco systems (for example the mountain gorillas in Uganda) to impressive lakes, one of which lake Tanganyika, is the deepest in the world. Your Tanzania gap year, will no doubt be influenced by this impressive feature, although you will probably be unaware of its impact. Despite this, the effect the great rift valley has had on Tanzania and all the African countries it encounters is impressive.
Tanzania Gap Year programmes can and should incorporate taking in World class safari parks like the Serengeti, and Lake Manyara. Then there is the Ngorogoro crater awaiting to take your breath away. A huge bowl like crater, that houses its own ecosystem and is ideal for a safari adventure like no other, with Africas big 5 on full display, any trip incorporating the Ngorogoro will be a highlight of any Tanzania gap year.
Somewhat conveniently there are other Safari parks and attractions located nearby, that allows you to combine some of the best Safari parks in Africa in a relatively compact trip. Many base themselves in Arusha, as a great gateway to the Safari parks, and then head over to Moshi, just a couple of hours away, to take on one of the biggest Tanzania gap year challenges... One of the main reasons people take a Tanzania gap year is to conquer the highest free standing mountain in Africa... the towering Mount Kilimanjaro. Kilimanjaro is actually a dormant volcano, one of a series of impressive geographical landmarks that marks the great rift Valley - other equally impressive ones dot the landscape further north like Mount Kenya and Mount Meru.
What makes climbing Kilimanjaro particularly interesting is that is not technically difficult, ie, it does not use crampons and ice axes, but it is still certainly a challenge. Climbing up to 5895m is the equivalent of attempting to walk into very high altitude, with little oxygen, and a lot of gravity!
If you are up for the challenge, it is certainly worth the effort, as any one who has stood on the roof of Africa during their Tanzania gap year will tell you, there really can be nothing else on earth like being able to admire the curvature of the earth spanning out for miles upon miles and disappearing in to the African bush below.

If you want a more relaxed Tanzania gap year, consider heading to Zanzibar, the spice islands. Picture crystal clear waters and superbly beautiful white beaches, Zanzibar is a beach lovers dream. Blessed with some of the best beaches in the world, let alone Africa, Zanzibar is the ultimate Africa Island get away. What you do their on your time out is up to you, whether it be admiring the quaint architecture of colonial stone town, or learning to sail a traditional Tanzania Dhow, or just not moving your butt off the beach. A Tanzania gap year has it all.
