The first week is designed to introduce you to Thailand and it's people, culture, language, attitudes and customs. It's a great way to meet fellow travellers and to make new friends. To ensure you have fun and to make it easy for you to meet all the groups, we have arranged some fun social nights including a welcome party, a Thai-style BBQ and a dinner at a gorgeous bar / restaurant with Karaoke for those that like to sing!
During this week you and your group will have a Thai lesson. You will learn enough phrases to get by on.
An explanation of the work places, projects taking place and information on what has been achieved in the past (volunteers that have chosen extra weeks only)
You will be shown the village, markets, temples and monuments in the local area. You will have several opportunities to go to the local town called Singburi. Here you can check your e-mails, go shopping and get a Thai SIM card for your mobile. There is also a pool in Singburi where you can go to swim, relax and sunbathe.
Done in groups to help you make friends with fellow volunteers, project leaders and programme staff. This is a great way to learn the language and a fun way to experience the new culture.
You will have time to explore the local area. There are plenty of opportunities for free time. You can relax around the eco-house, read, go swimming, shopping etc. The project co-ordinators are happy to show you around and point out the beautiful and amazing highlights that Thailand has to offer. Your weekends are your free time so feel free to arrange extra excursions if you’d like.
This option is a great chance to know more about Thailand, bond with your fellow participants, and learn about the local surrounding area. You will learn about Thai culture, Thai language and have a
taste of what has made Thai cooking so famous around the world through some cooking classes. You will also visit the famous Buddhist Temple: Wat Phranon Jaksi, the old capital of Ayutthaya (including
a visit to the Elephant Village), Lopburi’s museum and pagoda. This program below is written to give you an idea of this week (it’s an example):
After breakfast we have a group meeting and take a short walk around the village before lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon we visit a local handicraft shop before being the special guests of a
welcome party with local school students performing a Thai traditional dance for us.
An all day trip to the ancient city of Ayutthaya, many ancient ruins and art works can be seen in this city that was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong when the Thais were forced Southwards by northern neighbors. We will then visit the special “Elephant village” followed by dinner near the river side.
In the morning we start with a Thai lesson, after which will visit some of the beautiful and famous monuments and Buddhist temples near our centre: Wat Phranon Jaksi (A huge reclining Buddha image)
and the Bang-Rachan hero monument. In the afternoon there will a trip to the local town, here you can do some shopping, swimming or check email. In the evening, we will dinner at a famous Thai
BBQ restaurant.
In the morning, we visit a local school and join in with the local students. During school holidays (from mid-March till mid-May and in October), when the school is closed, we may visit a palm tree
farm or other local life instead. After noon we pick up from yesterday with another Thai lesson and then have an interactive Thai cooking class: after a short Thai lesson introducing the different ingredients
you will learn how to cook these ingredients into a renound Thai dish, and have it for dinner!
A full day travel with several visits in the Lopburi province. Some of the highlights would be visit to the famous Somdet Phra Narai National Museum and the Wat Phraputhabaht Temple (Buddha’s footprint)
and we will experience some local cuisine at a nearby restaurant.
Weekends are always free in most programs, but participants can delve deeper with advanced Thai Language lessons or hire local transport to visit the Swimming pool or shops in Singburi Town. (these
are extra-curricular, please request on site!). Also feel free to ask friendly staff for help in getting to some of Thailand’s many nearby tourist attractions.
This week focuses on the temple stay. You will be staying in a genuine temple and will be guests of the monks. You will be able to learn about their way of life and observe them in their daily routine.
On Monday morning you will learn about the Buddhist religion and history and in the afternoon you will be taken to Wat Phikun Thong temple. Wat Phikun Thong, also known as Wat Luang Pho Phae, is one of many famous temples in Thailand. It is situated in in Tambol Thon-samhor, Amphor Tha Chang. The temple area is pretty and peaceful and is surrounded by a garden and small lake. Here you can look around and are welcome to ask questions. You will stay back at the Eco house on Monday night.
On Tuesday, you will start the temple experience at a temple called Wat Song Phi Nong. You will stay here until Wednesday at 12noon and will then return to the Eco house. This will be a truly unique experience. You will live with the monks and they will help you understand their religion of Buddhism, try their best to teach you how to meditate and introduce you to their way of life. Few travellers are ever offered this opportunity. Wat Song Phi Nong is in the district of Sanburi, a group of monks here follow the doctrine of Karma.
These temples were created around the same time as temples in Sukothai (the old capital of Thailand before Ayutthaya and Bangkok). However, during the Burmese war most temples were destroyed. “Loungphor sanong” started to rebuild this temple in Sanburi District, Chainat province. We ask that you respect the monk’s way of life. They eat breakfast and lunch and then do not eat after 12noon. You are encouraged to follow this pattern for the time you are at the temple. However if you want to eat after 12 this is fine, but please do not eat in front of the monks.
Please note that you will have one overnight stay near the temple. Also remember to take mozzie repellent with you, as there are lots of mosquitoes.
After you have survived the temple experience you will be taken back to the Eco house where you will spend the night.
On Thursday after breakfast you will enjoy a biking tour. Hiring bikes in the morning you will explore an old traditional Thai house by the Noy river in a typical rural part of Thailand. After lunch you will stop by a local market and Thai monasteries before returning your bikes.
You will spend Friday visiting a Thai pottery market and Bueng Chawak zoo.
During this week you will have opportunities to help the local community. The biggest area in need is education so you will be visiting the local schools during term time or local children or perhaps local police from the village at the Eco house during school holidays. You can chat to the kids, help with both English and maths through playing games, singing songs etc. More information will be given to you about this during your first week.
Accommodation during this week will be either at the eco house or if you prefer, a home-stay. Most of the schools are within walking distance. For those schools that are not, the teacher or a local co-ordinator will transport you there and back. Remember to dress and behave appropriately. The students will look up to you and will attempt to copy your fashion and actions. Ladies, you need to make sure you don’t expose too much skin. Polo shirts/T-shirts, trousers and long skirts are all fine. Also the smarter you dress the more respect you will receive in the classroom. For those that have chosen this option, you can obtain lots of useful advice and ideas on how to teach from our website: Skills for the Classroom
It can be helpful to bring some materials to help you assist with teaching. For example, books, games and toys. It’s a nice idea to donate these to the school or children once you have left. Pens and paper will be provided. If you have any questions about this week, then please feel free to contact us or talk to the co-ordinators.
During the third week you and other participants will go trekking in the jungle and rainforest of the Phutoei National Park, a lush park not often visited by other tourists. This again will be a unique experience. You will be roughing it, but in beautiful surroundings. After this experience, you will have a lot to boast about when you go home as you will be sleeping in tents and surviving with the basics – I’m sure you will have a lot of fun!
The guides are very friendly and you will really enjoy yourself! Phu Toei National Park is located in the area of three provinces, Suphanburi bordering Uthai Thani and Kanchanaburi. The area is about 317 sq km and is about a three-hour drive from Singburi. Please note that the trekking is not for the faint-hearted and the itinerary is subject to change depending on seasons, weather conditions, group size etc. so please be flexible.
Depart Singburi for Phutoei National Park, pit stop to get food supplies. You will arrive at about 4.30pm when you will set up camp and have dinner.
Trek to Taperngkee waterfall, relax and have lunch. You will then start trekking from the waterfall to the school. After you arrive you will prepare the tents for camping outdoors.
After breakfast you will trek to the caves. You will have lunch at the school, trek back to the Hilltribe village and then cook together outdoors.
Trek to the nearby Huia Kha Khaeng region, visiting the village of the Karen Hill Tribe people, and there will be a special cultural performance by them.
Trek to the Lumtaphern Dam and spend the rest of the day relaxing outdoors.
You will leave for the hotel in the morning and have lunch once you’ve arrived. The rest of the day will be free to do as you please, read, relax or swim.
Check out from the hotel and depart to Ban Phae Pier, Rayong which will take about five hours. You will then get ready to go to Koh Samet for the Beach Week.
Remember to take the following with you on the trek:
We will provide the tent, first aid kit and food. Please note that this trek can be physically demanding and on some days you could be trekking for four to seven hours (with breaks). You will be trekking deep in the jungle, climbing vines and walking up and down mountains. Feedback from past volunteers has been that its hard work but one of the most adventurous and fun activities they have ever done. You will end up with lots of stories to tell your family and friends back home.
The treks are co-ordinated by project leaders and trained park rangers will also be close by.
During this week you will train in elements of Muay Thai. Our instructor will take you through traditional training techniques and develop your overall skills as a Thai boxer.
Whether you are an absolute beginner or have been learning this martial art for many years, our instructor will be able to develop a training programme to suit you.
While you are training you will focus on many different areas, a large part of Thai boxing includes agility, speed and balance. In order to develop each discipline of Muay Thai (i.e. punches, kicks, elbows etc), you will learn exercises and training drills that promote these three important things.
A typical day begins with an early start, getting up at 5.30am. This is necessary so that you are not spending the hottest hours of the day participating in intensive boxing training. You will head for a run to warm up followed by refreshments at the gym. From here you will take training exercises led by our experienced Thai Boxing trainer. Once fully warmed up you will head into the ring to spar one-on-one. Our co-ordinator will translate the instructor's explanations into English. He will try to teach you some Thai necessary to learn more about the sport.
From 9am you have the option of going to the swimming pool (14km away) or relaxing back at the eco-house with other participants. The morning routine is repeated at around 3pm. The training can be quite intense, so it is important that you have a “warm down” period each day.
You will have the opportunity to take part in optional Tae Kwon Do classes some evenings.
Changing Options
If you think that you may decide to change your option for week three from trekking or boxing to the teaching option, or that you may add extra cultural immersion weeks you can do this locally.
This is usually the travellers’ favourite part of the programme. You will spend from Sunday afternoon to Saturday morning on the gorgeous island of Koh Samet. This is free time for you to do what you want, when you want. All meals included. Some participants also like to try out local restaurants for dinner (at their own expense).
The only organised activity during this week is a boat trip on the Wednesday for snorkelling and fishing. Lunch is on board the boat. This is included in the price. You are welcome to join this activity or not and do your own thing. The rest of the time is free time to sun bathe, snorkel, explore the beautiful island or simply chill out in the many beach bars!
The accommodation is always in resorts close to the beach. Securing twin room accommodation can be a problem for us, as most rooms in Thailand have a double bed. We obviously don’t want you to share a bed with someone unless you want to! So we do split the group into a number of resorts to ensure you get a twin room. All the resorts are pretty close to each other and you will be able to meet up with the other groups. If you find yourself booked into a room with only a double bed and you prefer a twin share, then immediately tell the co-ordinators. We can make sure the resort upgrades your room. Thai people sometimes forget that it is unacceptable for people to share double beds, as this is all part of their culture.
Those on the 4-week option will leave the island on the Saturday and will arrive back in Bangkok around 4pm. You will be taken directly to the coach station in Bangkok. Here you can get a taxi to the airport, or you can travel onto your next destination. Alternatively you can be dropped off at the Royal Hotel. In the past, travellers on the 4-week option have preferred to spend one final night in Bangkok making onwards travel arrangements for Sunday.
Remember, if you do fly back on the Saturday, do not arrange your flight any earlier than 8pm. If you stay an extra day, you can arrange your flight for any time on the Sunday.
Kick off your world travels with 4 action packed weeks by some of the nicest beach in Thailand. During your time on this tropical island paradise you will also: Learn to dive, do som Thai Kick Boxing, try some freediving or rock climbing and do the Koh Tao adventure of course!
The following is a flexible itinerary

You will be trained in the basics and taken to 2 different dive sites. You will be taken to a maximum depth of 12 metres. If you would like to upgrade this package to an Open Water Course please state on your booking form (this costs €150/£150 extra)
Muay Thai is an incredible way to get fit! With this option you will have 5 sessions, ono on one with a personal Muay Thai Trainer! Mastering the basic kicks, punches and clinces you with let rip on punch bags, and heavily padded trainers waiting to teach you how to kick them properly! Do not worry if you have never done anything like this before, most have no experience. It is alot of fun though and very addictive!
We call this the Xtreme package because you can try out some of the Extreme sport favorites of freediving and rock climbing. Koh Tao is a superb place to do this with one of the top freediving schools in the world and some really impressive granite rocks to clamber all over! You will be in good hands no matter what you choose to do. Expect to be taught how to do these exciting sports safely with a little kick of adrenaline when you realize that you are actually doing something incredible.

o 4 nights in Sydney with a good intro pack to meet people
o 5 day learn to surf trip up the east coast
o Skydiving
o Fraser islands, Whitsundays sailing (a real cool experience)
o Scuba diving the barrier reef.
o Accommodation packs, discount cards included
As you come in to land at Sydney Airport you can gaze in awe as you see the iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House for the first time. Your excitement levels will go through the roof as you think about the possibilities and excitement that await you in this vibrant city! To help you get over the dreaded jetlag we have organized a fantastic four night Wake Up Arrival Pack, where you can settle in straight away at one of the coolest hostels in Sydney, right in the heart of the backpacker district – think comfy beds, a hearty Aussie breakfast each morning, wild nights out with new friends and all the essentials you need, such as internet access and mobile sim card. You don’t need to worry about a thing!
One of the highlights of this part of the trip is the city orientation tour, followed by a big backpacker night out, so make sure that you don’t have that first hangover before then, especially when an adrenaline-fuelled jet boat ride is included! With three full days to explore the city you can take in all of the main sights and with friendly, knowledgeable guides showing you the way you’re sure to get all the best local tips. Stroll around the many colourful markets, people-watch on famous Bondi Beach and visit the gorgeous little islands scattered around Port Jackson. When it comes to the pub and club crawl, the team at Oz Party could probably set a world record for the most amount of fun to be had in one night and given that it’s highly likely to be very late and very loud the last stop is the hostel’s Side Bar, so you don’t have far to crawl to bed.
By now jetlag should be a distant memory, but after four action-packed days and nights in Sydney you’ll probably be glad to have a break from the big city lights and lie on a gorgeous beach instead. Well, tough luck because you’re going surfing! You’ll be picked up right outside the Wake Up Hostel to embark on an amazing five day “surfari”, taking in two stunning locations on the east coast, where you can learn to catch the perfect wave by day and party by night – two typical Aussie pastimes. Thanks to the all-inclusive style of the trip the only thing you need to bring is yourself – all surf equipment, accommodation and meals (except lunch on travelling days) is included. We even throw in that all important sun cream. By the time you arrive at Crescent Head, your first stop, you’ll already have got to know your new mates on the coach, but if you are a bit shy don’t worry as there is no better icebreaker than beers and BBQ’s, not to mention falling off a surfboard! Stop two on the surfari takes you to Spot X, where you can enjoy the best beach parties and improve on your surf skills from the first couple of days. The expert instructors will really look after you, so there is no need to be nervous – just get in there and make the most of this amazing opportunity. We guarantee that by the end of these five days you’ll be a surf convert and what better way to impress (and annoy) your mates back in cold Blighty? The tour ends in the cool beachside town of Byron Bay, where you can continue straight on with the next part of the tour, or take some time out to lounge on the beach, go snorkeling and explore the rainforests.
A quick note here to point out that after the Surf Camp all of the sectors included in the Ultimate Australia Trip can be done at your own pace, allowing you to combine your travels with some work in-between, should you need to top up those funds. If you wish to complete the trip all in one go then you should allow for around 7 weeks, but you can take up to 6 months, which is highly likely once you get a taste of the Aussie lifestyle! The hop on-hop off style Oz Experience bus can be booked a few days in advance for each of the following sectors.
This section of the trip begins with some time spent in Byron Bay, chilling out and soaking up the bohemian lifestyle. However, if that sounds a little too sedate for you then you can take advantage of the skydive that’s included in your trip – it might only take a few minutes to get from 11,000 feet to the ground but the adrenaline rush will last so much longer!
The daytrip to Nimbin is the perfect antidote to too much excitement (is that even possible?!). After being picked up from your accommodation, the Grasshoppers bus will take you through the stunning scenery of Byron Bay to the famous town of Nimbin, Australia’s ‘alternative lifestyle’ capital. You’ll have around an hour to experience the hippie atmosphere and sample some special cakes before heading off to the explore rainforests and waterfalls, enjoy a pint in an historic Aussie pub and tuck into some food from the barbie. It’s quite possible that you’ll get to see Koalas and Kookaburras during the trip, and that’s before the beer! Surfers Paradise The next part of the bus trip takes you from Byron Bay north to Surfers Paradise – aptly named due to the 3km golden sand beach, right on the Pacific Ocean. There is something for everyone here, so if you need another shot of adrenaline there is bungy jumping and jet boating, if you’re the sporty type you can enjoy the surfing and beach volleyball, whilst those in need of some relaxation can chill out on the beach or in the cafes and parks of the Northside or West Quay districts.
The next stop for the bus is the city of Brisbane, capital of the ‘Sunshine State’ of Queensland (but where isn’t sunny in Oz?). So, what can you expect here? A vibrant nightlife with the abundance of bars and clubs, a bit of culture at the City Hall and Parliament House and the chance to get up close with some of Australia’s most well known natives at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. There is so much indoor and outdoor stuff to do here that you’ll never be bored and being the biggest city in Queensland it can be a good place to stop off for some work.
On the way from Brisbane to Rainbow Beach there is a stop off at the town of Noosa, to drop off old friends and pick up new ones. There is also a chance to have a wander around Wildhorse Mountain National Park, which provides some great photo opportunities of the gorgeous Sunshine Coast area – yet something else to make those friends at home envious about!
Rainbow beach is a must-stop place to pick up the Fraser Island 4 x 4 tour. This unique site, the largest sand island in the world, will blow your mind with its beauty – pristine white sand beaches, freshwater lakes and the world’s only sand-dwelling rainforest. This is definitely one you can tick off the ‘100 places to visit before you die’ list. Not only does the trip include two nights’ accommodation at Hervey Bay Backpackers, but also two nights camping under the stars, a chance to drive across the endless sands and the opportunity to meet some dingoes (human or canine – depends on who is in your group!) Back at Rainbow Beach you can indulge in some more close encounters of the animal kind (we’re talking marine life here) with the opportunity to feed the dolphins. Plus you can meet some new trip recruits at the Hervey Bay hostel stop.
After pick-ups and drop-offs at Hervey Bay the bus continues on to the towns of Childers and Bundaberg, which are the ideal place to stop off and replenish your dosh by doing some fruit picking. It’s pretty hard work but well worth it to make sure you’ve got enough funds for extra activities and partying. However, don’t go too mad on the Bundaberg Rum, or Bundy as it’s known, otherwise that fruit picking will be twice as hard! The next opportunity for stopping off and chilling out for a few days is the gorgeous little seaside village of 1770. If you want to spend a bit of time relaxing on golden sands and dipping your toes in the crystal clear turquoise water of the Coral Sea, then this is the place for you. There is still a ton of fun activities coming up on the trip so make sure you recharge your batteries so you can make the most of it! 1770 to Airlie Beach Sector
You’ll love this next section of the trip if you fancy a bit of ‘Yee Ha!’ No, not what you’re thinking ;0), this is a chance to leave behind the coast for a little while and experience the Aussie outback at Lochenbar Cattle Station. You get to see the world famous Kroombit Goat Rodeo and then see how long you can last on the mechanical bull, before jumping on horseback and cracking that whip to round up the goats (optional). After all that physical activity you’ll be glad to know that you get to stay the night and have a laugh around the camp fire. Airlie Beach There are quite a few miles to cover between Kroombit and Airlie Beach so on the way there is a stop-off at the town of Sarina for a game of barefoot lawn bowls (your guide will want to show off their skills!) before continuing onto the beachside party town of Airlie Beach and a highlight of the trip – the Whitsundays cruise. The three night package here includes two nights at the cool Nomads hostel and one night/two days sailing, giving you the chance to experience these unbelievable islands – beaches, rainforest, unusual marine life and a party-to-remember. Hello sailor!
The beach theme continues in Townsville, where you’ll be staying at one of the best hostels, right on the gorgeous sand, or on stunning Magnetic Island just off the coast (own expense). This is the sunniest spot on the Queensland coast, so you can make the most of the outdoor activities – swimming, snorkeling, hiking, koala spotting or just chilling out with your mates. There is plenty going on at Base Backpackers and when it comes to night-time entertainment look out for the full moon parties – definitely something to remember (or not!).
White sand beaches, lush rainforest and activities galore await you at the paradise hideaway of Mission Beach. A few days here can be as sedate or adrenaline filled as you choose and if you didn’t take advantage of the skydive option in Byron Bay, now’s your chance! You won’t get a better view of the area and long after you touch down on the ground your euphoria levels will still be sky high. Mission Beach is also home to the impressive Cassowary, a huge flightless bird with very big claws, a sharp beak and bad-ass attitude – you might not want to get too close, but they are certainly a sight to see.
You wouldn’t be in Oz if the last part of your ultimate adventure didn’t finish with a bang and that’s exactly what you get with the five night Adrenaline Overload tour! You’ll start by checking in to your accommodation at the Cairns hostel and getting to know your dorm mates in the bar before finding out from your guide exactly what you’ll be up to over the next few days.
You could settle in with a relaxing tour of the Daintree Rainforest, river cruise and visit to Mossman Gorge. The rainforest is unique in that it grows right down to the water’s edge and is one of the most complex ecosystems on earth, containing an abundance of Australian plant and wildlife, including the Idiot Fruit (honestly, we’re not kidding!). Ok, biology lesson over.
If you’ve been a bit shy in getting to know your dorm mates then getting thrown around in an inflatable raft whilst being pounded with foamy water is the perfect way to break the ice! Your Tully River trip is a full day that includes hostel pick-up/drop off, BBQ lunch, highly experienced guides and up to 5 hours rafting, not to mention other activities such as rock jumping, rapid swimming and raft surfing. You won’t go home dry but you will be on a high!
You can’t visit Oz and not visit the world famous Great Barrier Reef, and as trips go the Passions of Paradise tour is the best on offer. Dates are flexible and there are daily sailings, so you can fit this in when you choose. You may have seen images of this amazing natural attraction in books or on TV, but nothing can prepare you for seeing it in real life – exotic marine life, colourful coral gardens and stunning views all around will take your breath away almost as much as the skydiving! If snorkeling isn’t enough for you, you could always use some of your hard earned cash (or the bank of mum and Dad!) to take a diving trip.
You can read more about these activities by seeing the Cairns Adrenaline Overload trip.
The minimum amount of time you need to complete this trip is seven weeks, which is ideal if you only have a short amount of time before college or university, but you can take up to six months if you want to make it more of a gap year – travel a bit, work a bit, etc.
One thing to remember is that drives are very long, Australia is enormous and the bus might not go every day, so double check the schedules. However you decide to do it this really is the trip of a lifetime and one that we think is a life changer – you might leave home a nervous, first-time traveler, but you’ll return a daring adventurer with more friends than you could have imagined!
If you are opting for the boomerang, we change your Strewth pass to a Bruce pass to get you from Sydney to Cairns.
Want to start in Cairns? Talk to us about your options.
Thats 3 weeks of not having to find a bed for the night included in the price!
Lots of Xtreme gappers combine this trip with working in Australia. Some even do the sailing course so they can work on a sailing boat on the Withsundays straight after. A job is 99% guaranteed and helps you save up for some extra cash before you continue your trip again!
