Looking for the perfect combination of excellent diving, top dive training and that to die for tropical island life, look no further. This little island of the coast of Lombok, just a 2 hour boat ride from Bali brings you the best Divemaster programme in Indonesia. |
The first thing to note is that this is quite confusing because this program is not actually a Divemaster technically, because it is not a PADI qualification, this is the equivalent of a Divemaster course but the certification is through SSI and called a Dive Control Specialist.
We will refer to this course as a Divemaster through out however, as the qualifications are essentially the same.
You can read more about the difference between PADI & SSI here.
The Dive Control Specialist with SSI has a larger emphasis on practical teaching of students in the classroom, pool and ocean where as PADI has a more in depth theory content.
This course provides elements of training from both agencies but ends up with the "better" SSI qualification.
We prefer to teach the theory to the PADI level and complete the practical application to the SSI level so as a student you receive the best of both agencies. Both qualifications are recognized in every dive centre in the world, you can go on and complete the Instructor course of either agency once you have completed your internship. The Dive Control Specialist is considered a higher certification then the PADI Divemaster within the diving community and is equivalent to PADI Assistant Instructor. For the Dive Control Specialist (DCS) Internship we run the course over a period of 4-5 weeks (with 2 or 3 extra weeks if you have not got any open water qualifications).
During this month you will be expanding your diving theory (in fact all the theory you learn is the same as in the Instructor Development Course), assisting courses, running Dive Control Specialist conducted programs, guiding fun divers, developing emergency assistance plans, learning to demonstrate skills, mapping a dive site, fun diving and completing a number of swim tests. During your internship you will be working mainly with one of our instructors. They will be your mentor and will be responsible for your schedule, exams and any guidance you may require during the month. However, you will work with all of our instructors assisting with students and courses. This is a great way for you to become accustomed to working with different people who adopt different styles and methods of teaching. In addition you will also get to work with all of our local staff. Our local dive guides have been working with us for many years and have a wealth of experience between them. You will get to dive with them in order to learn the dive sites and observe how a guide works. To be signed off as a Dive Control Specialist you must have 75 logged dives, so whenever you have the chance you can dive as much as you like. You will also spend time with the guys learning how to fill tanks and service regulators.

No! Absolutely not! SSI and PADI are just two different certifying agencies offering courses to learn to dive. All certifications are exactly the same and are recognized in the same way world wide. There is not a value added between PADI and SSI, they are the two largest dive agencies and both are very good. As for the hierarchy of courses between the two agencies this is where the differences occur.
SSI puts a great emphasis on the fact that there is no substitute for experience in the water and so treats the Advanced certifications slightly differently to the PADI structure by rewarding divers based on their number of logged dives and experience accumulated. |

The diving on the Gili’s is all about the marine life. There is a massive variety of fish life, and it's a good mix between impressive big stuff like sharks and turtles, and more specialist smaller stuff like leaf scorpion fish and pipefish. Usually the visibility is 20+ meters which is amazing. The coral isn't perfect everywhere; a lot of the coral in the shallows has been damaged by a combination of dynamite fishing and El Nino much of which is regenerating nicely. The coral in the deeper water is unaffected, and we have some stunning sites at 18 - 30m where the coral is completely intact. We dive all year around here and conditions are usually good.
Where else can I take my PADI Divemaster? We also offer Divemaster internships in the following locations: Not all Divemaster courses are the same, different locations have a different feel to them, and then there is the diving too. Depending on what you want to see different locations offer different experiences. If in doubt email us with your questions about the divemaster programme of interest, or get trip notes. Just click on the Get Trip Notes button and we will email you more information on the course within a few minutes. Remember Xtreme Gap Year is run by qualified Divemasters, and we have been to the locations, and dived them! This means we can give you genuine honest advice about what to expect on your Divemaster course or internship. |
