Whale Shark Diving Mozambique



Scuba diving in Inhambane is amongst the best in the world, with reefs close to every beach, including the world famous Manta Reef and Gallaria. Regular sightings of Giant Manta Rays, Whale Sharks, Turtles and other teeming marine life make this one of the best gap year diving destinations in the world. This is an intensive diving trip in the best place in the world to dive with Whalesharks. Cheaper and more alot more dives than the conservation project too.

    Group start dates on the first Monday of the Month, although this programme is flexible on request and groups are not guaranteed.

    There are always lots of people around to make friends with, and Tofo is an increasingly popular backpacking destination (due to the impressive beaches and marine life). It is a popular diving and gap year destination.

    Getting there

    June to August (and December)  are the most popular times. Fly into Inhambane in Mozambique. LAM is the local airline connecting from Johannesburg. Tofo is approximately 20Kms from Inhambane.

    From Inhambane - from there take a chapa (minibus taxi, about 15 MTn (New Metical)) or a private taxi (about 50-100 MTn).  About £3!

    If you are lucky there is a big bus leaving to Tofo as well (10 MT).

    From Maputo

    Buses run from the Maputo junta leaving between 5AM-8AM, straight to Inhambane which take 5-9 hrs, if it doesn't break down. As of 2009 the cost is 270 MTn (about £7) each plus 50 MTn (£1.50) per bag.

     

    Don't get scammed by the "porters" trying to help you with your bag and saying the luggage is 250 MTn each.

    Buy your baggage ticket directly from the guy with the receipt.

    Most likely this will mean an over night stay in Maputo. We advise staying at Base (pay locally we will not book this for you) (in Maputo) as they offer direct shuttle services from Maputo to Tofo at 500 MTn each (no extra charge for bag), if you are travelling alone then this will save you money compared to taking a taxi to junta and the standard fare. The hostels in Maputo are not exactly pretty, but they are safe and trust worthy and it is only one night, tomorrow you will be in a beautiful resort.
